Welcome to the Kaikoura District Council and the local government website for the Kaikoura District of New Zealand. Kaikoura is a Green Globe Certified Community: we are committed to sustaining our environment by managing and improving our impact and were one of the first Councils to adopt a Zero Waste Policy. Our website offers both tourist information for those who visit Kaikoura and community information for local people.

Rural Fire Control

The Kaikoura District Council is responsible for administering the Rural Fires Act, and its role is to respond to rural fires, to monitor the fire risk and determine when it is appropriate to restrict the lighting of fires, and to issue fire permits in an environmentally sustainable manner.

Fire Permits

Click here for an application form for a fire permit.  Permits cost $10.00.

Volunteer Rural Fire Forces

Volunteer Rural Fire Forces are operating from Kaikoura township, Oaro/Goose Bay, Clarence and Kekerengu.  Volunteers are urgently needed for each of these fire forces, training and fire fighting equipment is provided.  Please contact the Emergency Management Officer at the Kaikoura District Council if you think you can help.
