IWK manages and operates Kaikoura's Resource Recovery Centre and landfill and is delivering our goal of zero waste. They are a people organisation aiming to provide employment for Kaikoura's community using waste material, and have 10 full time and one part time employees.

This little company has proven itself with true kiwi ingenuity, and has taken diversion from 42.5% to 62.5% in the space of just five years.

They also aim to generate funding through projects that protect, restore and enhance the environment, such as Trees for Travellers, which is an initiative run by IWK.

So what does Innovative Waste Kaikoura do?

  • run a kerbside collection service for all your recyclables
  • sort all the material at the resource recovery centre
  • sell salable products to markets elsewhere in New Zealand
  • sell second hand goods through their shop
  • compost greenwaste and sell the compost on site
  • have a composting drop off system
  • manage a clean fill area for construction and demolition area including metal
  • collect and recycle the town rubbish bins and also the recycling stations

IWK also carry out general landfilling operations, which include:

  • managing the landfill and tip face,
  • managing offal pit,
  • managing a hazardous waste store for domestic hazardous waste,
  • coordinating Trees for Travellers.
