Welcome to the Kaikoura District Council and the local government website for the Kaikoura District of New Zealand. Kaikoura is a Green Globe Certified Community: we are committed to sustaining our environment by managing and improving our impact and were one of the first Councils to adopt a Zero Waste Policy. Our website offers both tourist information for those who visit Kaikoura and community information for local people.

Did you know...?

You can apply to Council for Responsible Dog Owner Status which gives you a discount on your annual dog registration fee.  Simply fill out an application form and drop it in to the Council office.  You will need to make an appointment with the Dog Control Officer for him to inspect your property to ensure it is adequately fenced

How do I register my dog?

Once your dog has reached 3 months of age, you will need to have it registered with the Council, and your dog will be issued with a numbered tag to attach to its collar.  Registration forms are only available at the Council office.

Do I need to microchip my dog?

From 1 July 2006, all dogs registered in New Zealand for the first time (except certain working farm dogs which are exempt) will have to be microchipped. This will mainly apply to new puppies born on, just before, or after that date. Most other dogs will not need to be microchipped.   Click here >>> for more information on microchipping.
