Water Supplies

Goal

To provide a water and wastewater infrastructure that meets the needs of the community, ensures a healthy standard of living, and minimises effects on the environment.

Background and Rationale for the Council’s Involvement

In the Kaikoura District, there are currently six public water supply systems.  Of these water supplies, East Coast and Fernleigh are essentially supplies for stock and irrigation.  Kincaid is becoming more and more a domestic supply, due to growth over that area.  The remainder, Kaikoura Urban, Oaro and Peketa, primarily service domestic households and commercial activities.

Council has certain legal obligations regarding the supply of water, such as its duty under the Health Act 1956 to improve, promote and protect public health within the district.  It also has a duty to ensure there is sufficient water in urban areas for fire fighting purposes.

Private Water Supplies

A substantial number of rural properties currently receive their water from private sources, eg wells, bores, rainwater tanks or private supplies.  A number of these supplies, where they supply drinking water to communities, may need to be assessed in terms of Sections 126 and 127 of the Local Government Act 2002, which relates to an assessment of the quality and adequacy of each supply.
