Kaikoura District Council has funding assistance available annually for biodiversity related projects, which has been set up as a contestable fund. This means that interested parties or individuals can make an application to Council to gain assistance for a biodiversity related project that you may have on the go, or in mind.
The Biodiversity Contestable Fund is awarded annually . A limit of $3,000 per application has been set, in order to fund a range of projects.
Applications are open from 1 October to the end of March each year and successful applicants are generally notified in April.

Successful applicants for the 2008 round:
Brett Cowan & Colleen Lee, Torquay Street – funding towards spraying, scrub cutting, weed removal and native plantings on a hilly urban residential section Trevor Bolton, Inland Road – funding towards additional fencing of a QEII covenant wetland area. Lindsay Rowe – funding towards the protection of the Blue Penguin population in South Bay (Coast Guard building). Forest & Bird – funding towards the restoration of Wairepo lagoon (trial area) Bob Bell, Hapuku – funding towards weed control and planting of natives in a QEII covenant area.
