Conservation holidays in Kaikoura

Since 2003 Kaikoura District Council, Innovative Waste Kaikoura, Te Runanga O Kaikoura, Environment Cantebury and Department of Conservation have worked together to run conservation holidays in Kaikoura.

Kaikoura is a recent addition to international conservation volunteer programs and some of the groups that contribute to environmental conservation projects in the District include:

International Student Volunteers (ISV) are based in USA.  The non profit organisation aims to create an an adventure travel program for students to make a difference by volunteering in communities abroad.  The program combines conservation, education, community development and recreation.

British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) are the UK’s largest environmental charity.  BTCV organises practical conservation holidays all over the UK and internationally. Volunteers can get involved either at home or while on holiday and expand their experience by actively contributing to the conservation of the community.

To date, four projects have taken place in Kaikoura with volunteers working on:

  • expanding a walking track through the QEII trust property at Homewood Hill,
  • developing and maintaining Tom’s Track,
  • planting Trees for Travellers,
  • regenerating riparian zones along Lyell Creek,
  • developing Killarney Street Track
  • restoring a wetland at Oaro.
