Welcome to the Kaikoura District Council and the local government website for the Kaikoura District of New Zealand. Kaikoura is a Green Globe Certified Community: we are committed to sustaining our environment by managing and improving our impact and were one of the first Councils to adopt a Zero Waste Policy. Our website offers both tourist information for those who visit Kaikoura and community information for local people.

Investigations

Investigation 1:

Write a letter to a Kaikoura business outlining why we should no longer use plastic bags in Kaikoura.

You will need to

  • find out about persuasive letter writing
  • find out why using plastic bags is damaging to our environment, what negative impacts do they have?

Here is an example of a letter to the editor. Look at your local paper and find some more examples to help you write your own letter.

Investigation 3:

With the help of an adult, choose an area in your community to clean up. This could be on the beach, in your school or at a local park. With the rubbish you have collected sort it into categories and graph your results. Print out the Rubbish Collection form to help you.

Investigation 4:

Visit Innovative Waste, or your local recycling and waste collection depot. Take along the rubbish you collected in investigation 3 and find out what happens to it. Can some of it be recycled or reused? Print out the Innovative Waste form and take notes on your trip. You will use these later on.
Contact Ian Challenger – 3197148, to arrange a visit.

Investigation 5:

Choose an item that can be recycled such as a milk bottle. Make a flow chart to show the processes involved in the manufacture, use, distribution, collection, recycling and consequent stages in the life of your item. Include a reference to where each stage takes place in your local community or where materials come from or go to in your district.

Investigation 6:

In groups, create a radio or newspaper advertisement to educate people on how to recycle, compost or to encourage people not to use plastic bags. Ask the local newspaper or radio station if they will run/play the ad. You will need to research what makes a good advertisement. Follow the advertisement link to find out about some advertising tricks to help you produce a fantastic and interesting ad.

Investigation 7:

Collect a variety of rubbish including something plastic, something edible and something you write on. Bury these items in the ground, make sure you identify and date the spot you bury them. Over the next month make weekly checks on your rubbish and identify any changes that occur. Print out the Mini Landfill form to help you.
