Welcome to the Kaikoura District Council and the local government website for the Kaikoura District of New Zealand. Kaikoura is a Green Globe Certified Community: we are committed to sustaining our environment by managing and improving our impact and were one of the first Councils to adopt a Zero Waste Policy. Our website offers both tourist information for those who visit Kaikoura and community information for local people.

Extra activities for your class

1. Technology Challenge

Using plastic containers design and build a yacht which will sail across a swimming pool faster and more accurately than those of other teams within your class. Use only recycled materials in the construction of these vessels.

2. New Toy from Old

Make a toy suitable for a 3-6 year old using used plastic containers as the main material. The toy must be safe and well constructed (no loose parts to fall or be pulled off). See if you can trial your toy at a nearby child care or with the new entrant class.

3. Class Display

Collect plastic items to show the diversity of manufactured goods, the range of plastic used, the different processes used, the various qualities of plastic, the use made of recycle plastic etc.

4. Waste Week

Organise a Waste Week at your school where the whole school concentrates on waste, waste prevention, waste reduction, reusing and recycling in all areas of the curriculum. You could have talks, visits from the local council and waste contractors, public displays, plastic free days (including glad wrap) clean up times etc.

5. Make a Flyer

Produce a flyer advertising Innovative Waste.  The advertisement should mention what recyclables the centre accepts, as well as the location and hours of the centre.

6. Game show

Create a question and answer game show that encourages your class to share their knowledge of recycling. This could be based on television shows such as “It’s in the bin!” or “Wheel of Recycling”. You could record this on video or DVD and show your friends and family.
