Why should Kaikoura become plastic bag free?
- Kaikoura is well known for our efforts to protect the environment and we need to keep up the effort!
- Protect our marine mammals (throughout the world over 100,000 marine mammals mistake floating plastic for food)
- Reduce wind blown litter
- Minimise use of global resources needed to make plastic bags
- Generate global publicity through the program

How are we going to do it?
We need YOUR involvement! Click here to see how YOU the resident or visitor to Kaikoura can be involved!

Kaikoura High School student, Helena Knowles (aged 11) designed a fantastic logo to be printed on 10,000 reusable bags.
Local businesses were invited to be involved - so far close to 25 have signed up and are listed below. Each business name is printed on 10,000 re-usable bags and the following businesses have committed to seling the bags.
Major funding sponsors of the project are:
- Kaikoura District Council
- Canterbury Waste Committee
- Zero Waste NZ Trust
- Pub Charity

Christchurch based paper product supplier Shardlow & Co are generously supporting our local initiative by offering discounts to Kaikoura businesses purchasing paper products.
When & how will it happen?
During December 2007 each Kaikoura household received one reusable bag FREE and each local school student also received one bag free.
The remaining bags are being sold by local businesses - and all profits reurned to the Enhancement Trust to print more bags.
If your business would like to sell the reusable bags, contact:
