Civil Defence

The Kaikoura District Council is the Civil Defence Authority in the event of a Civil Defence emergency.  When a CD emergency is declared, the Council office becomes the Headquarters to coordinate our response.

Do you know where to go for help?

Sector Posts in the district are:

  • HQ: Kaikoura District Council offices (34 Esplanade)
  • Kaikoura Primary School (19 Torquay St or Esplanade)
  • Beach Road (New Life Centre, 203 Beach Road)
  • Oaro (Oceanview Restaurant)
  • Clarence (Woodbank School)
  • Hapuku (Hapuku School)
  • Kekerengu (Community Centre)
  • Inland Road (Lynton Downs School)

Unhoused people should contact the Welfare Centre that will be set up at the Memorial Hall.  The Kaikoura Red Cross volunteers assist with peoples welfare at these locations, and will arrange accommodation, bedding, clothing, and food as required.

In the event that the Council office is not usable for any reason in an emergency, the Barnardoes Early Learning Centre on Deal Street will be the alternative CD Headquarters.  Likewise, if for any reason the Memorial Hall is not usable, the alternative Welfare Centre will be set up at the Takahanga Marae on Takahanga Tce.

Due to Kaikoura's geographical isolation from other centres, and vulnerable transport routes both north and south, it is vital that there is a Civil Defence organisation capable of responding to an emergency without immediate assistance from outside the district.  Depending on the nature of the emergency, we may be isolated from the outside world for prolonged periods of time.

You could become a volunteer to assist your community at a time of dire need.  Help is needed for emergency response teams, radio operators, welfare assistance, coordination and administration.

Contact the Emergency Management Officer at the Kaikoura District Council if you can help.
