Even if you reduce and reuse as much as possible, there will still be something left to recycle and Innovative Waste Kaikoura will recover and recycle everything they can.

How do I recycle?

The trick is, make it easy! In the house keep a box or bag next to your rubbish container, and then separate recyclables as you go, in the garage keep your recyclables in a large container ready for collection, when’s collection day?

What can I recycle?

Innovative Waste Kaikoura will collect your recycling at the kerbside but only certain things, everything else can be taken to the Resource Recover Centre, or try recycling yourself!

What Innovative Waste Kaikoura will collect on their kerbside pick-up

• Paper & cardboard; newspapers, any magazines, phone books, junk mail, office paper, computer paper, envelopes, (including ones with windows), any cardboard, paper towels (clean), toilet paper tubes, egg cartons etc.
• Plastics; IWK collect plastics from 1 to 7, if it has a recycling symbol, IWK can sell it.
• Metal; IWK collect steel and aluminium cans (clean!)  and will collect clean tin foil, clean pie plates and dinners trays (but these must be clean)
• Glass bottles; any glass will be collected as long as it is clean

Separate these during the week and put them on the kerbside on collection day in a container, just make sure they are clean as something dirty could mean that it will be left behind!

What other things can I take to the Resource Recovery Centre?

• Batteries; IWK have a battery collection point for all batteries
• Construction and demolition waste; concrete, wood and other clean material
• Electronics; old computers and televisions, old and broken household appliances
• Household hazardous waste; there is a storage facility for chemicals but check with IWK before taking  them to site
• Metal; any metal both small and bigger quantities, corrugated iron and so on
• Motor oil; IWK has an oil silo but have to charge for disposal at 20 cents a litre
• Greenwaste; lawn clippings, branches, weeds anything that grew in the ground will be composted except Flax and Cabbage Tree leaves, these will not rot and are landfilled, it costs $30 a tonne to dispose of greenwaste.

How can you recycle on your own?

By setting up home composting, worm farms or Bokashi systems, information will soon be included on composting etc but in the mean time here are two tips;

• If you don’t compost at home, IWK will take green waste and food scraps for their composter. They also have information on how to set up a home system.
• Lawn clippings; you can leave the clippings on the lawn, then there are no bags to empty and less watering and fertilizing. However, if you prefer a manicured lawn, the clippings can be composted at home or by IWK, just make sure no lawn sprays have been used.

And the final thing is ... don’t forget to buy recycled too, and then you are completing the cycle!
