Reduce

The most obvious ways of doing this is to reduce the packaging accumulated from your shopping, and there is a lot of it! And to reduce junk mail that pours through the letter box every day!

Tips for reducing your packaging

  • Try and buy large quantities of food (unless it will spoil before use) and avoid individually wrapped packages that increase the paper and card to be recycled.
  • Take a reusable shopping bag with you and decline the offer of another plastic bag!  Reusable bags can be bought at Kaikoura’s 4 Square and New World.
  • Vote with your dollar and if possible buy from companies that use less packaging.

No Junk Mail

  • Put a “No junk mail please” sign on your mail box, Council has some on its front desk, so next time you are calling in feel free to take one.
  • If you are getting junk mail from a particular company you don’t want return it unopened and marked “Refused, return to sender”, or contact them directly and ask to be removed from their mailing list
  • Don’t forget to recycle any junk mail you do get!
