Reuse

As the saying goes, “One person’s trash is another person’s treasure” so if you have something that may have a second life give it to a friend or take it to the shop at the Resource Recovery Centre, they will take anything and if possible find a home for it.

If it’s in good condition try selling it, either on Kaikoura’s Out of the Blue 88.3 FM’s buy, swap and exchange show, or using the new Waste Exchange program, or even www.trademe.co.nz , you will find somebody somewhere wanting what you don’t!

Also there are lots of charities and companies that take unwanted items, Molten Media in Christchurch for example will lovingly restore your old computer and give it to a community group or sell it at a low price, have a look in the Yellow Pages for information on where they and other recyclers are.

Substitute throw away items with reusable ones

  • Use old T-shirts for rags and old tooth brushes for cleaning shoes
  • Use cloth napkins instead of paper ones
  • Buy a reusable shopping bag when you’re in the Kaikoura 4 Square or New World next time (and remember to take it with you!
  • Keep those old margarine tubs for storing food in
  • Buy washable nappies, you would be surprised at the range and variety available that save you money and help the environment, look for more information on washable nappies coming soon to this website
  • Buy a battery recharger, these days they run nearly anything from torches to digital cameras, its cheaper in the long run and keeps the batteries away from Innovative Waste!
