Civil Defence
In an emergency, this page will be updated as often as possible to give information on our response to, and recovery from, a Civil Defence emergency. In an emergency, listen to your local radio More FM on 89.9, or Blue FM on 100.3, for advice - this will be the quickest way for Civil Defence staff to get information to you and others in the community.
If you or your family are injured or in danger, please continue to use the emergency 111 service for ambulance, fire and police assistance
Important Information:
Due to our location and environment, NZ faces many potential disasters. In some cases, such as weather related events or long distance tsunami, there may be time for warning. However an earthquake or tsunami close to land could strike without warning.
It is vital that you are prepared to cope - potentially on your own - for three days or more.
When Kaikoura experiences seismic activity;
- what would you do?
- do you have a family muster point?
- do you have an emergency household plan?
- do you have your getaway kit ready?
In the event of a major earthquake, the chances are you may be alone and without essential services. The district's emergency services will not be able to attend to everybody's needs immediately.
If an earthquake is felt, and it alarms you, then you need to think about actioning your household evacuation plan.
Do not rely on the fire siren or emergency personnel to alert you to move to higher ground. You need to be responsible and take action yourself.
