About us …

The Kaikoura District Council is considered the smallest Council on mainland NZ (the Chatham Islands Council is the only NZ Council smaller than us).  But while our population base (3,621 permanent residents) makes us the ‘smallest’, we pride ourselves on our achievements, many of which have left the ‘big’ Council’s following in our footsteps.

We’re a very close team of 25 positive-minded individuals who can multi-task, meet deadlines, and get involved with the community and elected members.  Being such a small team, we get to work on projects at all levels, and take on many different responsibilities, unlike our big-city counterparts.

We offer a very competitive remuneration package, which includes fully subsidised medical insurance, plus a great team to work with, proactive management, on-going support for training and personal development, and flexible working hours are negotiable.

Our Lifestyle

We offer you a place to work in a spectacular district nestled between the mountains and the sea, without any of the hassles of a big city.  We are committed to helping staff achieve work/life balance.  Suited to people who enjoy the outdoors and marine activities, staff at Council are a social bunch who lead active (but very relaxed!) lifestyles.  Kaikoura has a growing café culture, combined with its fabulous scenery.  Boutique shopping, fishing, diving, cycling, walking, beaches, it is all here to enjoy.
