Welcome to the Kaikoura District Council and the local government website for the Kaikoura District of New Zealand. Kaikoura is a Green Globe Certified Community: we are committed to sustaining our environment by managing and improving our impact and were one of the first Councils to adopt a Zero Waste Policy. Our website offers both tourist information for those who visit Kaikoura and community information for local people.
Kaikoura District Council works closely with a number of organisations in our community, to achieve common goals. We treasure these partnerships and acknowledge those organisations here.
Kaikoura District Council maintains an open and participatory partnership with Te Runanga o Kaikoura. The Runanga is the organisation that services the statutory rights of Maori in our district. The Runanga has representatives on a number of Council's decision making committees - particularly those with an interest in the environment and land use, such as the District Plan Committee and the Hearings and Applications Committee.
Also known as the Kaikoura Coastal Marine Guardians, Te Korowai o Te Tai o Marokura literally means "the cloak of Te Tai o Marokura", and culturally translates to lay a cloak of guardianship over the sea around Kaikoura. Membership of Te Korowai includes Kaikoura commercial fisherman, recreational fishermen, tourism operators, members of Te Runanga o Kaikoura, and local people with an interest in our environment.
