A General Rate is a rate set for all rateable land within the district. In Kaikoura, this is set at different rates in the dollar of capital value of the land for different categories of rateable land. Those categories of rateable land (and the differentials applied to them) are defined as:
Residential & Other
All rateable properties in the district of Kaikoura not otherwise classified.
Differential 100% of general rate
Commercial
All rateable properties in the district of Kaikoura used principally or exclusively for commercial and/or industrial purposes, (not being farmland as defined in section 2 of the Rating Powers Act 1988); or Used for providing accommodation for commercial reward for not less than five persons, and for the avoidance of doubt, including any motel, hotel, motor lodge, hostel, camping ground or “boarding house” (as defined in the Kaikoura District Council District Plan); or Used as licensed premises under the Sale of Liquor Act 1989.
Differential 300% of general rate
Rural
All rateable properties in the district of Kaikoura, the area of which is more than 5 hectares, but not including properties – Classified as commercial; or Used principally for sporting purposes.
Differential 100% of general rate
Special Accommodation
All rateable properties in the district of Kaikoura used for providing accommodation for commercial reward for less than five persons, and for the avoidance of doubt, including any property providing short-term accommodation such as Bed & Breakfasts, but not including long-term rental accommodation.
Differential 120% of general rate
