Water Rates & Charges
What do water rates and charges pay for?
Water Annual Charges, Water Unit Charges, and Water Meter Charges, all pay for the costs involved in supply, treatment, upgrading and maintenance of each water supply areas. Water Loan Charges (where these are applicable - currently only Kaikoura township and Oaro water supplies) fund the costs of loan servicing i.e. loan interest and principal.
Only properties that are physically connected to the water supply, (or within 100 metres of the scheme in the case of Kaikoura township and Ocean Ridge) will be rated these types of targeted rate.
Kaikoura Township
Kaikoura Water Loan Charge
Applies to all rateable properties within 100 metres of the Kaikoura water supply, and is a charge per separately used or inhabited part of a rating unit.
Kaikoura Water Annual Charge
A Full Charge applies to all properties connected to the Kaikoura water supply, and a Half Charge to all properties situated within 100 metres of, but not connected to, the supply. This is applied per separately used or inhabited part of a rating unit.
Water Meter Charges
Certain properties are considered “extraordinary consumers”, such as commercial premises or properties with a swimming pool, for example. These properties are metered and water meter charges apply. For water usage which exceeds 365m3 per annum, a charge of $1.00 including GST per cubic meter applies. All properties with a meter will incur a twice-annual meter reading charge of $16.50 per reading. This charge will not apply if a meter reading is supplied by the consumer for the half-yearly reading (the final reading at 30 June must be undertaken by the Council or its contractors).
Ocean Ridge
A Full Charge applies to all properties connected to the Ocean Ridge water supply, and a half charge to all properties situated within 100 metres of, but not connected to, the supply. This is a charge per separately used or inhabited part of a rating unit, and uses the same rationale that applies to the water rates for the Kaikoura township.
East Coast Rural Water
An annual charge applies to all properties within the East Coast rural water area, and is applied per water unit (i.e. if your property is within the rural water area, but does not own any water units, no charges would apply).
Kincaid Rural Water
An annual charge applies to all properties within the Kincaid rural water area, and is applied per water unit (i.e. if your property is within the rural water area, but does not own any water units, no charges would apply).
Oaro Rural Water
Oaro Annual Water Charge
An annual charge applies to all properties within the Oaro rural water area, and is applied per water unit (i.e. if your property is within the rural water area, but does not own any water units, no charges would apply).
Oaro Water Loan Charge
An annual charge applies to all rateable properties within the Oaro rural water area, other than those properties in respect of which a lump sum contribution has been paid, and is applied per water unit.
Peketa Rural Water
An annual charge applies to all properties within the Peketa rural water area, and is applied per water unit (i.e. if your property is within the rural water area, but does not own any water units, no charges would apply).
Suburban Water
A small number of properties on the outskirts of the township (in the Red Swamp Rd/Mt Fyffe Rd area) are connected to the Kaikoura water supply with restrictors fitted, which limit water consumption dependant upon the number of water units owned by the consumer. An annual charge applies to all properties within the Suburban water area, and is applied per water unit (i.e. if your property is within the Suburban water area, but does not own any water units, no charges would apply).
