Flush your Drinking Water Taps!
Some plumbing fittings within our homes have the potential to allow minute traces of metals to accumulate in water standing in the fittings for several hours. Although the health risk is small, the Ministry of Health recommends that you flush a mug full of water from your drinking water tap each morning before use to remove any metals that may have dissolved from the plumbing fittings. Kaikoura District Council recommends this simple precaution for all households. Rather that waste it, this mug of water is perfectly safe to use to water your plants each day.

From the Office of the Mayor
I believe there are times that we, as a community look at ourselves, what we do and brag about our successes. Take some pride in ourselves – if you like. This month’s boast is all about the success of a small but important service that we as a community have been delivering over the past few years.
That is …… our Community Van.
Remember when all those raffles and cake stalls were to raise money to assist with helping our elderly and disabled in their homes and to get about? We called it simply “community care”. That money is still in the bank and the interest on those funds is managed by a group of community trustees. It is distributed to assist with home health care for all sorts of people in need. Then our community care management team, instead of tapping these funds went elsewhere to purchase and organizes an identified need – a community van.
The van is managed by volunteers and driven by volunteers; it is self-funding with the users making small donations and via the generosity of several Kaikoura businesses. It has a wheel chair facility and the drivers are always smiling and on-call.
It is used very regularly to get our elderly and disabled shopping, to the medical centre, hospital appointments, excuse for an outing, physio. sessions and has even done a quick flit to the vet! Not to mention getting some to the races! On average it transports over 50 people per month around and about!
To the drivers, organizers and businesses who continue to support this service-Thank you! To those who use the service – well done! Perhaps you know someone who could benefit from this great community service, give me a call and we will work it out.
The point I make is that this is an excellent and envied service. It is with our community and council working together that we can achieve some pretty impressive outcomes. Our Kaikoura Community Van service is an exceptional example of this. I look forward to bragging about others as the year progresses. Cheers
Mayor Kev
