Annual Report 2008/2009 incorporating the Community Outcomes Report 2009
NOW AVAILABLE!

Full copies of the Annual Report 2008/2009 are now available at the Council office or at the library.  This document is Council’s main accountability document to our community, and compares Council’s financial and service performance against that which was forecast in the Annual Plan 2008/2009.

This year is also an opportunity to reflect on what we as a community have achieved in terms of our community outcomes, and the Community Outcomes Report 2009 has been published as part of the Annual Report.

A summary version of the Annual Report is also available; this is a condensed version of the full report, and gives a quick overview of our performance.

Both the full Annual Report, and the Summary Annual Report, are also available on our website,

A Call to Register Interest in a Natural Burial Option for Kaikoura

Council is investigating public interest in the option of natural burial within a section of the Kaikoura Cemetery.

The following characteristics distinguish a natural burial:

  • Embalming is kept at a minimum or not undertaken
  • Coffins are designed to quickly compost
  • Coffins are buried  at a depth of one meter to speed composting
  • Use of native plantings to create a natural park like setting among the burial sites enriching the area for local bird life and other wildlife
  • No headstones

If you would be interested in such an option becoming available, please register your interest by contacting Kd Scattergood at the Council office, or emailing kd.scattergood@kaikoura.govt.nz  by the 14th of December 2009.

Removal of Vegetation Likely to Cause a Fire Hazard

Coming into the 2009/10 fire season and with increasing vegetation growth and warmer summer conditions advancing, Kaikoura urban residents are advised to take care to minimise potential fire hazards.

Pursuant to section 650 of the Local Government Act 1974 residents and section owners are required to cut down or otherwise eradicate and remove any broom, gorse, scrub, weeds, undergrowth, dry grass or other growth on the land whether standing or growing or not, that may constitute a potential fire hazard.

If you are unable to clear your section then please advise Don Clark at the Kaikoura District Council, on (03) 319 5026 (during normal office hours) and arrangements can be made to have it cleared on your behalf with a suitable contractor.

Failing that, Council has the ability to clear the section and the cost of the work shall be a charge against the land owner.

Don Clark
Principal Rural Fire Officer
