FROM THE MOUNTAINS TO THE SEA LET'S KEEP KAIKOURA LITTER FREE!
Every year, the council pays contractors to pick up litter - not to mention the hours of voluntary service members of the public contribute to picking up litter. Some litter is unintentional, some is apathy and some people just don’t realise the impacts of dropping litter. We can all do our bit to stop litter.
You can make sure you put all your own rubbish and recycling in the appropriate bin. If there is no bin, make sure you take your rubbish home.
-
Don’t drop fruit peelings or apple cores. Even though it breaks down, it is still litter.
-
If you see someone else dropping litter, ask them to pick it up.
-
Lastly, make sure all your rubbish and recycling is secure. Litter can sometimes blow from other places, making our public spaces look unsightly.
If you are a business, remember you are responsible for your own waste.
Did you know ...
-
One plastic bag can take 1000 years to break down.
-
Cigarette butts are the most common form of litter.
-
People are more likely to litter in an already littered environment.
-
People under the age of 15 are less likely to litter than adults.
So, do your bit Kaikoura, if you see litter – pick it up. Be careful of broken glass or anything sharp. If you see Bev the beach cleaner, or any other volunteer, doing their thing, remember to say THANK YOU!!
