Trade waste is liquid waste that is allowed to go to the sewers from food, hairdressing and other businesses. Council has a Trade Waste Bylaw 2022 to help protect the sewerage system and make sure costs are shared fairly between businesses and residential properties. Trade waste consents are now required. Council staff will visit businesses from June onwards to explain how to get a trade waste consent and to help with deciding what equipment and maintenance is needed. Many businesses already have equipment such as grease traps and most consents are expected to permit ongoing operation and maintenance. There is a small number of businesses where higher levels of control may be required.
