Water Update During Flooding Event

Due to the exceptionally heavy rainfall associated with the recent severe weather event and declared State of Emergency, parts of the Council-owned and operated wastewater network have experienced overflow events.

The intense rainfall has resulted in stormwater entering the wastewater system at volumes exceeding its normal capacity. Despite the efforts of our operational team, this has led to wastewater overflows in some locations.

Council crews have been actively monitoring the network throughout the event and are responding to affected areas as conditions allow. Public and staff safety remains our highest priority, and response activities will continue as soon as access and weather conditions permit.

As a precaution, we ask residents to:

• Avoid contact with any floodwater, ponded water, or wastewater-affected areas.

• Keep children and pets away from affected locations.

• Wash hands thoroughly if contact with contaminated water is suspected.

• Avoid recreational activities in waterways that may have been affected until further notice.

• Report any wastewater overflows or public health concerns to Council.

We recognise the inconvenience and concern this situation may cause. Unfortunately, overflows can occur during extreme rainfall events when network capacity is exceeded.

Council will assess impacts, undertake any necessary clean-up and environmental monitoring, and investigate opportunities to improve network resilience once the emergency response phase has concluded.

• Kaikoura Urban supply - Operating as usual except between 179 Schoolhouse Road and SH1 due to a pipe burst. The rest of the residents on that line will receive water at low pressure. Pipe repairs subject to weather and ground conditions.

• Kincaid Scheme - WTP turned off since 3 pm due to low reserve raw water tank levels. People to continue preserve water.

• East Coast Scheme - Operating as normal.

• Ocean Ridge Scheme - Operating as normal

• Fernleigh Scheme - Due to loosing pipe with the bridge and power outage, the reservoirs are depleted and no water is supplied. Investigating options.

• Peketa Scheme - Operating as normal

• Oaro Scheme - Operating as normal
