Changes to IWK Rubbish and Recycling Services
Rubbish and recycling services provided by IWK are changing as indicated in the Council's Long Term Plan.
The following changes will take place from October 1st.
• Kerbside recycling collections for Hapuku, Oaro, Goosebay and Peketa will cease.
• Rural recycling stations at Suburban and Peketa will be removed.
The previous cost to maintain those recycling services which have now stopped are not included in your rates (as of July 1st, 2021). These changes have come about due to the proposed increased costs associated with continuing to provide all kerbside recycling collection and recycling stations for rural areas.
The Council considered the best option was to discontinue some of the less efficient services to avoid passing on substantial rates increases to ratepayers. These changes were consulted on and publicised through the Annual Plan 2020/21 in June 2020 and the Waste Management Minimisation Plan in Dec/Jan. Through Facebook, newsletters, rates notices, radio, website, and advertisements in local papers.
The following changes will take place from December 1st
• Kerbside recycling collections for Kaikōura township, Ocean Ridge and South Bay will change to fortnightly. (Recycling collections will remain weekly until Dec 1st)
• A weekly kerbside rubbish collections for Kaikōura township, Ocean Ridge and South Bay will start from Dec 1st. Branded kerbside rubbish bags will be available to purchase for $4 per bag from Innovative Waste Kaikōura and other selected outlets.
The branded rubbish bags (available mid-late November) will cost $4 and you will be able to leave them at the kerb (Urban area including South Bay and Ocean Ridge) or bring them into IWK directly for no extra charge. You can still use paper bags, other black rubbish bags etc, and bring them into IWK - for a $4.50 charge. This service is 100% user pays.
