Wakatu Quay - demolition well underway

asbestos removal lads

Scope have been working hard on the Wakatu Quay site over the past month. The first job in each building has been to carefully remove all the asbestos so that it doesn’t contaminate the general building rubbish once the demolition starts. Both the asbestos and the old building rubbish are being loaded into separate containers and taken down to Kate Valley for disposal.

The Kate Valley Landfill is 70 kilometres north of Christchurch, the landfill was consented in March 2004 and opened to receive the first delivery of waste in June 2005. Click here for more information about Kate Valley Landfill.

Next week should see the largest building down to ground level, a blank slate for new beginnings! The project is tracking on time and the newly cleared space should be open for everyone to enjoy over summer.

The Kaikōura Marine Development Project is funded by the Provincial Growth Fund and also includes a business case study for the South Bay Harbour.
