For the first time ever, Kaikōura Youth Council is hosting a Youth Awards to celebrate Kaikōura's outstanding youth and young leaders.
Nominations are open until 22nd August, followed by an Awards Night at Memorial Hall on 30th September.
The awards are a significant achievement by the Youth Council with support from the team at Te Ha and Kaikōura's Youth Coordinator. Together, they have secured substantial funding and are set to put on a fabulous and uplifting event celebrating the best of Kaikōura youth.
“Best of all, this whole thing is youth-led, the Awards Night is something our young people wanted to do, all we’ve done is support them to make it happen”, said Youth coordinate Taran Manuel. “Some of our Youth Councillors recently attended the Christchurch Youth Awards. Between them they won three awards, they were also blown away by the event and the way it celebrated the achievements of young people”
“After the earthquake, the Youth Council wanted to do something positive and inclusive for youth that was also a bit special. The awards night is a chance for some of our young people who have been through a lot to dress up, go out and be recognised for their hard work, energy and community support. It’ll be fun, and it’ll be fabulous and we’re really, really looking forward to seeing what they manage to pull together.”
There are 10 categories covering leadership, attitude, participation, service, arts and culture. There's also an Adult Support category to recognise the local adults helping youth be the best they can be. The youth categories are open to anyone aged 12-24 and the nomination process is quick and easy.
The Youth Council is currently seeking small financial sponsorships from local business – if you’re interested please contact Taran on 027 372 5151.
