Five of our local bridges require a full replacement after the 2016 earthquakes. Rebuilding the Hawthorne Rd, Evans, Rorrisons Rd, Gillings Lane and Scotts Road bridges is being done as a package to help ensure value for money and high quality work.
To ensure safety and provide for future growth, Hawthorne Road, Rorrisons Road and Evans Road bridges will be replaced with two lane bridges (not the original one lane), a pedestrian footpath will also be added to Hawthorne Bridge.
The total project cost is estimated at $4.56 million.
Five of our local bridges require a full replacement after the earthquakes (Hawthorne Rd, Evans, Rorrisons Rd, Gillings Lane and Scotts Road). Based on safety audit findings and future growth planning, the Council has agreed to improve the level of service by replacing these one-lane bridges with two lanes, at the Hawthorne Rd, Rorrisons Rd, and Evans (Mt Fyffe Road) as well as making provision for a pedestrian footpath on the Hawthorne bridge. The total project cost is estimated at $4.56million.

The tender process for Five Bridges has now concluded.
The Rebuild Steering Group were presented a tender that offered significant savings through an alternative methodology to the pre-designed package. This tender was is the favoured option, but required requires more time to carry out detailed designs and assessments.
We hope expect to have awarded the contract for the Five Bridges package by mid-December which means that construction will now start around March 2019.
The delayed start date for construction has no impact to the completion date, which remains at September 2019.
The trade off is that while the preferred tender will ensure the same level of safety as the previous designs and offer better value for money, construction will not be started until March 2019, not late in 2018 as we had hoped.
We will provide further information once the contract has been awarded.
