New details are as follows:
Friday 30 October | 9am–11am
Meet at the Pōhowera Park entrance, as before.
With 718 native plants now in the ground, our focus is shifting from planting to looking after what we’ve established and tackling the weeds and regrowth around the planting area. Thanks to those who have continued to work in the area since our last planting. We are extremely grateful.
We'll be there for the full 2 hours, feel free to pop along for however long you have time for. We look forward to catching up.
The plan is to work along the area which has been recently planted and also opposite Ocean Ridge. There will be a range of jobs on offer depending on what you are keen and able to tackle:
• Plant care – check on the new plants and release from any weeds and grasses around them
• Grass control – weed-eating the grass around the new plants and previously mulched areas (bring a weed eater and suitable protective gear)
• Blackberry – treat the new regrowth popping up everywhere and apply cut-and-paste gel (bring snippers to cut and we will have 10 x bamboo strength cut n paste pots to use)
• Wilding pines – walk across the logged area and pull-out small seedlings (very satisfying)
• Opposite Ocean Ridge - we have recently had some machine clearing done to cut back non-natives and the area now needs attention to cut and treat the vines, blackberry and more cutting back of non natives in the areas we couldn't get to with machinery. (might need loppers and hand saws).
What to bring:
Please bring along whatever tools you’re comfortable working with. Clippers/secateurs will be particularly useful for blackberry and Old Man’s Beard. If you have a weed eater and are happy to bring it along, that would also be very useful. Please bring protective gear.
We will supply the cut-and-paste bamboo strength herbicide.
Please wear sturdy footwear, gloves and suitable clothing for working around weeds and vegetation and for the weather conditions.
Morning tea: Feel free to bring something along to share.
Thanks again for helping us care for Pōhowera Park.
See you Friday!
