State Highway 1 remains closed overnight.
It is closed north of the Kaikōura Township to the Hapuku Bridge.
The road is closed in Ward.
Evacuation cordon to remain in place overnight and people are not to return to houses yet.
State Highway 1 south of Kaikōura is open but there are some hazards and fallen trees.
The Inland road remains closed.
It is important to stay off the roads.
Keep windows and doors closed to prevent wind and gusts as well as smoke.
Be vigilant for spot fires and report to 111 if you see any.
It is still too early to fully assess all damages. We are waiting for daylight and will give further updates in the morning.

Takahanga Marae on Takahanga Terrace, is still available for emergency evacuation accommodation and shelter.
