Due to current strong winds forecast until Monday 27th, please avoid lighting fires and ensure any previous fires are fully extinguished. All Open-Air fires including fireworks and sky lanterns are prohibited in Wellington, Canterbury, Mid-South Canterbury, Marlborough and Hawke's Bay.

Significant storm to impact much of New Zealand today and Tuesday morning
An active low pressure system over the Tasman Sea moves across New Zealand today and Tuesday morning, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to many regions, including heavy snow for Canterbury High Country and inland Otago.
Warnings and Watches are in force.
People are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts.
Strong Wind Watch
Area: Canterbury High Country north of SH73, also Marlborough south of Cape Campbell
Period: 8 hours from 9:00am Mon 27 Oct to 5:00pm Mon 27 Oct
Forecast: Northwest winds may approach severe gale in exposed places. Winds easing from the south this afternoon.
Low chance of upgrading to a Warning.
Area: Nelson/Tasman north of Kohatu
Period: 5 hours from 11:00am Mon 27 Oct to 4:00pm Mon 27 Oct
Forecast: Northwest winds may approach severe gale in exposed places.
Moderate chance of upgrading to a Warning.
Area: Christchurch and Banks Peninsula, and eastern Canterbury Plains from Rangiora to the Rakaia River mouth
Period: 4 hours from 8:00pm Mon 27 Oct to 12:00am Tue 28 Oct
Forecast: Southwest winds may approach severe gale in exposed places.
Moderate chance of upgrading to a Warning.

Strong Wind Watch lifted for Canterbury High Country south of SH73: Northwest winds have eased and the Watch is now lifted.
