Community Update - Flooding Event - 6pm Thursday 9th July

According to MetService, the rain is expected to continue easing over the weekend, providing some welcome relief from the recent wet winter weather.

We know that some members of our community remain isolated, particularly those along Inland Road. Our team has been working to make contact with residents to check on wellbeing and assess any needs, especially where there are concerns about stock welfare.

Kaikōura is open for business

With West End reopening this morning, Kaikōura is ready to welcome visitors and locals alike for the Matariki holiday weekend.

Our local businesses are open and would love your support.

Please note that State Highway 1 South remains closed while NZTA Waka Kotahi continues repair work. If you're planning to travel, check the latest road conditions before you leave.

Be aware of landslide risks

As the heavy rain subsides, we're reminding everyone to stay alert for signs of landslides on your property and around the district.

Prolonged rainfall can increase the risk of slips and landslides, which can occur suddenly and without warning. Road embankments and steep slopes are particularly vulnerable.

Warning signs to watch for include:

- Small slips, rockfalls, or ground subsidence at the base of slopes.

- Doors and windows that suddenly become difficult to open or close

- New gaps around door and window frames

- Steps, decks, verandas, or other structures shifting or tilting

- New cracks or bulges in the ground, roads, footpaths, or retaining walls

- Leaning trees, fences, or retaining walls

- Water unexpectedly emerging from slopes, such as a new spring

If you suspect a landslide on your property, move out of its path immediately.

If access is cut off or there is an immediate risk to life or property, call 111.

Report slips or debris on public roads to Kaikōura District Council on 03 319 5026.

Looking ahead to recovery

As conditions improve, we'll be assessing impacts on roads, stopbanks, and areas affected by slips so we can continue our transition from response to recovery.
