Community Update - Flooding Event - 3pm Saturday 11th July
Good afternoon, Kaikōura!
It's been another busy day for our response and recovery teams.
The fine weather is helping crews assess damage, reconnect communities and plan the next steps on our road to recovery.
Property assessments
Following further Rapid Building Assessments, we've currently identified around 30 properties (rural and urban) that have sustained flood damage, with three properties issued yellow stickers. Two affected households are currently being supported in temporary accommodation.
So far, we've received 16 Rapid Rural Damage Assessment surveys from landowners. We’re acutely aware of the impact this event has had on our rural sector during an already busy season, which is why we’re reminding affected farmers to please complete the survey.
Every response helps us build a clearer picture of the impacts across our rural communities and identify where support is needed most.
Two homes in the South Bay area have also been issued precautionary red stickers due to landslide risk. These properties are scheduled to be reassessed by geotechnical engineers on Monday, 13 July.
While no additional properties at risk of landslides have been identified, landslides remain a key risk as conditions dry out. We encourage everyone to stay vigilant and report any concerns to us on 03 319 5026.
Additional water available for Fernleigh Scheme residents
Affected households on the Fernleigh Scheme can now fill their own containers with treated water from the tap located at the corner of Dairy Farm Road and Inland Road.
Residents on both the Fernleigh and Kincaid schemes are reminded to conserve water while our infrastructure crews continue to work hard to fully restore supplies to both networks.

Local roading updates
- Cribb Creek Bridge remains impassable after the approach was washed away, although the bridge structure is still standing. A temporary ford crossing is expected to be passable by 4WD as early as tomorrow.
- Kahutara Bridge and Greenburn Bridge are both intact and passable.
- Puhi Puhi is now accessible by 4WD only. Motorists are urged to use extreme caution.
State Highway 1 update
State Highway 1 south remains closed between Kaikōura and Cheviot due to extensive slip and flood damage, including a new rock and vegetation slip yesterday that has added to repair efforts.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi advises this section is expected to remain closed until at least 14 July.
NZTA working as quickly as possible to repair this essential lifeline for our district.
