Kaikōura District Council welcomes the Government's announcement
of $835,000 in International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL)
funding to support projects that will enhance community facilities, improve
visitor experiences, and help prepare the district for future growth.
Mayor
and Council representatives have welcomed the investment, noting that it
recognises the important role Kaikōura plays as one of New Zealand's premier
visitor destinations while also supporting infrastructure and public spaces
used every day by local residents.
This
investment is wonderful news for Kaikōura, and we acknowledge the Government
for recognising both the opportunities and challenges faced by communities like
ours that welcome visitors from around New Zealand and the world.
While
tourism supports local jobs, businesses and economic growth, a small ratepayer
base can make it challenging to fund improvements that benefit everyone. This
funding will help us continue enhancing the visitor experience while delivering
lasting value for our community.
The
funding will support a range of projects across the district, including
improvements to Pohowera Park, upgrades to the northern entrance to Kaikōura
township, and enhancements to facilities that welcome cruise ship visitors.
Investing in Pohowera Park
Funding
will help progress implementation of the recently adopted Pohowera Park
Masterplan, transforming the former forestry area into a vibrant recreational
and environmental asset for residents and visitors alike.
Planned
improvements include enhanced walking, cycling and horse-riding trails, picnic
and family recreation areas, native planting, public amenities, and
opportunities for cultural storytelling and public art developed in partnership
with stakeholders.
The
project represents a significant investment in community wellbeing,
environmental restoration and outdoor recreation, creating a destination that
future generations of locals and visitors can enjoy for years to come.
Creating a Stronger Northern Gateway
Visitors
arriving from the north will benefit from improvements to the township entrance
area, including enhanced landscaping, improved parking, safer access to public
facilities, upgraded stormwater management, and new welcome signage.
This
project has been a long-standing aspiration for the district and aims to create
a gateway that reflects the pride our community has in Kaikōura. As one of the
first impressions visitors receive when arriving in town, the upgraded entrance
will encourage travellers to stop, explore and support local businesses, while
also providing improved amenity and functionality for local residents.
Supporting Cruise Ship Visitors
Funding
will also allow targeted upgrades to cruise ship landing facilities.
The
improvements include better access, safety enhancements, upgraded amenities and
clearer wayfinding signage. These relatively small but important improvements
will help ensure visitors receive a warm welcome to Kaikōura while
strengthening the district's reputation as one of New Zealand's most memorable
cruise destinations. They will also support local businesses that benefit from
visitor spending during the cruise season.
Benefits for the Whole Community
Council
believes the projects funded through the IVL programme demonstrate how tourism
investment can deliver lasting benefits for the wider community.
Improved
public spaces, safer facilities, enhanced recreational opportunities,
environmental restoration, cultural initiatives, and upgraded infrastructure
will be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.
We
know our community wants to see tourism growth managed in a way that delivers
real benefits for local people. These projects do exactly that by improving
places and facilities that residents use every day while helping showcase
everything that makes Kaikōura such a special place to live and visit.
